How engagement scores are calculated

Engagement scores help you understand how your team is doing across key workplace dimensions. Each score is based on employees' responses to Pulse Survey questions.

What is an engagement score?

An engagement score is a number between 0 and 10. It represents how Employees feel about a specific topic based on their survey responses.

Engagement scores are calculated for:

  • Overall engagement.

  • The 10 standard engagement drivers.

  • Custom dimensions (if used).

Note: At least three responses per metric are necessary for a score to appear, ensuring data anonymity for employees.

How are scores calculated?

Scores are based on a weighted average of responses collected over the past 90 days.

The system applies the following rules:

  • Each question uses a 0–10 scale.

  • If a user answers more than once, only their last response counts.

  • If a question is deactivated or modified, it no longer contributes to the score.

What affects engagement scores?

The engagement score for each dimension can vary depending on:

  • Response volume and timing.

  • Survey frequency.

  • Whether Employees skip or answer certain questions.

Consistency in survey participation helps ensure the scores are reliable and reflect real trends.

Workleap AI insight: In the Overall engagement score section of the Pulse Survey report, Executives and Team Managers can select Analyze engagement to see Workleap AI-generated summaries, insights, and suggested actions.

If you drill down into a specific engagement metric, the Analyze metric button generates insights for that metric.

The engagement and metric scores analyzed are based on the selected group and date range. Ask any follow-up questions in the Workleap AI assistant.

When do scores update?

Scores are updated in real time as new responses come in. You may notice small changes from week to week, especially in smaller teams.
